Our Story
The building now known as the Honey Fitz Theatre originally served as Lough Gur National School from 1854 until 1966. It replaced an earlier hedge school, which was located just outside the western wall of New Church cemetery, and the entrance to this original site can still be seen along the roadside today.
In the early years, pupils paid a small weekly fee to attend, and the school operated with very modest resources. The principal even lived on site, in what is now the stage area of the theatre.
In 1966, the school moved to its current location in Holy Cross. The original school building was later renovated through community effort and continued to play an important role locally as a space for events and activities.
In 2012, a modern extension was added to Lough Gur NS, providing bright, well-equipped classrooms and improved facilities for our school community.
